2014 The Year of:
"A Gospel of Hope for a Broken World"
"The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because He hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; He hath sent me to heal the broken-hearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, to preach the acceptable year of the Lord."
Luke 4: 18-19 KJV
Highlights from the UBA 159th Annual Session
The 159th Annual Session was held on October 22, 2013 at Hopewell Baptist Church. Forty-one churches were represented by messengers and visitors. A wonderful time of worship and fellowship was enjoyed by all.
The afternoon session included a report and a recommendation from the Constitution and Bylaws Committee, proposing a number of amendments to the UBA Constitution and Bylaws. These changes were approved by Messengers and included changing the association year to January 1 through December 31(Artricle 4). Approval also included the clarification of Article 6, establishing the quarterly sessions to be held on the 4th Tuesday of January, April, July and October. The approval of these amendments brought about the recommendation that all current officers' and committee members' terms of service continue through December 31, 2013. Copies of the amendment are available through the UBA Office. Complete copies of the Revised Constitution and Bylaws will be available by January 1, 2014 (through the Association Office) and will also be in print with the 2013 UBA Annual (which is available in the Summer of 2014).
The afternoon and evening sessions included special music from Dr. Chris Baucom, and the Mill Creek Quartet. We were blessed by the Moderator's Address from Dr. Eric Cook, a report and message from Dr. Linzay Rinquest, Principal of the Cape Town Baptist Seminary in South Africa, and the Annual Sermon given by Dr. Billy Belk, entitled "Living in Our Babylon". A special visit from Noah (Rev. Caroll Anthonoy, Philadelphia Baptist Church) was also a highlight of the evening service.
During the evening sessions, Dennis Burton and Brenda Carter recognized 4 ladies and guests from the General Baptist State Convention of NC for their 40 years of participation with the Baptist Women's World Day of Prayer.
The annual Bivens/Funderburk Awards are presented to an individual for life achievement contributions to the cause of missions and a church award is given in recognition of significant contributions to the cause of missions during the last associational year. Mr. Frank Casstevens, UBA Youth Director and Minister of Youth and Music at New Salem Baptist Church, received the 2013 individual award. Freedom Biker Church, with Rev. Steve Starling, Pastor, received the 2013 church award.
The following officers were elected to serve the Union Baptist Association: Mr. Randy Tucker (Euto Baptist Church) was elected Moderator, and Dr. Chris Baucom (Senior Pastor, Benton's Cross Roads Baptist Church) was elected Vice-Moderator.
